A patient of mine was clearing out her house and found two embroidered silk pictures her father bought in Hong Kong years ago. She very kindly gave them to me. I was struck by the fine quality of the work and had them framed. They now hang in my hallway. I was curious about the content of the pictures. I was used to seeing nature or deities in Chinese art, but these embroideries had scores of little children running around. After some research, I discovered that they depicted the legend of 100 sons. Supposedly, the motif comes from Zhou Wen Wang (1152 – 1056 BC), founder of the Zhou Dynasty. He was said to have had 99 sons and adopted one more. These young boys bring a happy and pure yang energy into your house, according to Feng Shui. They also symbolise fertilty and the blessing of many healthy descedants.
