The goji berry tree I planted last year has immediately got to work and is bearing lots of fruit. I picked a handful this morning to eat with my yoghurt. The taste is difficult to describe: they’re juicy and sweet, but with a slight bitter/astringent aftertaste that lingers in the mouth.
Goji berry is called Gou Qi Zi in Pinyin and is used a lot in Chinese medicine. It’s a Yin and blood tonic and easier digested than most. It nourishes Jing (this is the life force – our vital essence), thus is good for fertility. It brightens the eyes (often with chrysanthemum flower) and, despite its sweetness, is a folk medicine for diabetes. It enters the Kidney meridian, (which is used to treat fertility and diseases of old age), the Liver merdian (which goes to the eyes) and the Lung meridian (it moistens the Lung, so it good for dry cough).
